SPARTA Golf Society
The Sparta Golf Society origins go back to 1921 when the Minister of Health, Sir Alfred Mond chaired a meeting assisted by the 2nd Viscount Astor to discuss the setting up of a golf society.
The Society continued under the Ministry of health until after WW2 when it re-emerged under the Ministry of Housing later as MHLG. In 1971, the Department of the Environment was formed encompassing the Ministry of Transport, Pubilc Building and Works and MHLG. Each had its own golf society and all continued their separate existences until the late 1990, when they merged into one.
In 2002, the Society was renamed the Sparta Golf Society to reflect name of the recreational association it was affiliated to.
Today the Society welcomes current and former staff members from both DLUHC and the Department for Transport.
The society organises 6 main events each year at golf courses in London and the Home Counties. These events are full days of 36 holes with coffee and bacon rolls to start the day, a lunch and a full dinner. Members can choose to do just part of the day if they wish and golfers of all abilities are very welcome.
Each year the Society organises events at some very exciting venues. Sparta and Society members can benefit from very generous subsidies which make the events very affordable.
